The Prior Lake American was founded by Jordan Independent Publisher Keith Thaves in 1960, and along with the Independent it became part of Southwest in 1979, and the Red Wing Publishing family of newspapers in 1982. Today it is mailed free of charge on Saturdays to 8,400 homes and businesses in an area that has a mix of lake, suburban and rural flavors. The newspaper annually conducts a voluntary subscription campaign. The Prior Lake American serves several area townships – Credit River and Spring Lake – along with the Prior Lake-Savage School District. In independent surveys, it has been consistently cited as the No. 1 source of news and information for area residents. Its website is www.plamerican.com.
